Why good meals go unreviewed

  • The moment passes

Guests mean to write something on the way home. By then they are thinking about something else.

  • Finding the page takes work

Search for your name, open the listing, find the review button. People give up part way.

  • Nobody likes asking

Staff feel awkward asking at the end of service. A card on the table asks for them.

Where it goes in a restaurant

Four places your customers already look, and the product that fits each one.

  1. On every table

Seen through the meal and tapped once the plates are cleared.

    Google Review Stand, from $36.95
  2. With the bill

Slip one into the bill folder, at the moment phones come out to pay.

    Google Review Card, from $17.95
  3. At the bar or the counter

For bar service, takeaway and anyone who never sat down.

    Google Review Sign, from $15.49
  4. In delivery bags

Reaches the customers you never meet.

    Google Review Card, from $17.95

Ask every customer. The same way.

Google lets you ask customers for reviews. What it does not allow:

  • Asking only the customers you think are happy
  • Offering a discount, a freebie or anything else in return for a review
  • Pressing someone to write one while they are with you, or telling them what to say
  • Giving staff a number of reviews to collect, or asking customers to name them in one

Put a card on every table, whoever is sitting at it. A Smartap asks everyone the same way, and what each customer writes is up to them.

In the US, the FTC's rule on consumer reviews, in force since October 21, 2024, also bans rewards tied to what a review says.

Questions

What a restaurant asks before ordering.

All questions
Can I use Google on the tables and Tripadvisor with the bill?

Yes. Each Smartap opens one review page, so order the stands printed for Google and the cards printed for Tripadvisor. Either can be pointed somewhere else later, without reprinting.

We have several restaurants. Can each one collect its own reviews?

Yes. Every Smartap has its own link, so each restaurant's cards open its own Google profile, and their QR codes sit in one dashboard.

Can staff hand the card to guests?

Yes. Hand it to every guest the same way, with the bill for example. What Google does not allow is choosing only the guests who seem happy, or offering anything in return.

Which phones work with it?

Every iPhone from the iPhone 7 onwards and nearly all Android phones read the chip. Older phones, including the iPhone 6 and 6S, can scan the QR code printed on every Smartap instead.
